![]() Damage to the radish by flea beetle and cabbage root fly ( Delia radicum L., Anthomyiidae) along with unspecified leaf damage was recorded. Care was taken to protect the radish plots from pesticide due to wind drift during applications. Radish ( Raphanus sativus L.) was used as an example of a common garden crop and it was sown as four replications at three different distances and on four occasions during the season. One half of the OSR field was treated with insecticides to control flea beetles ( Phyllotreta spp., Chrysomelidae) and pollen beetle ( Meligethes aeneus Fab., Nitidulidae). Spring oilseed rape, OSR ( Brassica napus L.), was established in Southern Sweden as an example of an agricultural field crop. The aim of the present study was to study whether field pesticide use influences amount of pest damage in neighbouring garden crops. Inclusion of a pesticide product does not indicate a recommendation or endorsement by RHS Gardening Advice.Chemical control of insect pests is often necessary to ensure high yields of field crops. Plants in flower should not be sprayed due to the danger to bees and other pollinating insects On edible plants make sure the food plant is listed on the label and follow instructions on maximum number applications, spray interval and harvest interval A broad spectrum systemic insecticide containing the active ingredient Flupyradifurone (Provanto Smart Bug Killer) is available for use on ornamentals and selected ediblesįollow label instructions when using pesticides.Provanto Ultimate Fruit & Vegetable Bug Killer, Provanto Sprayday Greenfly Killer) and cypermethrin (e.g. Westland Resolva Bug Killer), deltamethrin (e.g. More persistent contact-action insecticides include the synthetic pyrethroids lambda-cyhalothrin (e.g.These pesticides although broad spectrum have a very short persistence and so may require reapplication to keep beetle numbers in check. Bug Clear Gun for Fruit & Veg, Neudorff Bug Free Bug and Larvae Killer). Organic contact insecticides containing natural pyrethrins (e.g.The systemic neonicotinoid insecticide acetamiprid (e.g.Provanto Ultimate Fruit & Vegetable Bug Killer) and cypermethrin (e.g. More persistent contact insecticides include the synthetic pyrethroids lambda-cyhalothrin (e.g.Several applications of these short persistence products may be necessary to give good control If chemical controls are used, they should be used only in a minimal and highly targeted manner. Pesticide control The RHS believes that avoiding pests, diseases and weeds by good practice in cultivation methods, cultivar selection, garden hygiene and encouraging or introducing natural enemies, should be the first line of control. Encourage wildlife in the garden, such as birds, frogs and predatory ground beetles who will eat the larvae and sometimes the adult beetles.Where possible tolerate populations of brassica flea beetles, on larger brassicas where outer leaves are discarded, these beetles usually have a limited effect on edible parts.Growing susceptible crops under insect proof mesh may keep the beetles out.Within this group the shorter persistence pesticides (that are usually certified for organic growing) are likely to be less damaging to non-target wildlife than those with longer persistence and/or systemic action. If this is not sufficient to reduce the damage to acceptable levels then you may choose to use pesticides. When choosing control options you can minimise harm to non-target animals by starting with the methods in the non-pesticide control section.
